Postpartum Depression treatment, counseling & therapy

Postpartum Depression is a disorder that affects a large number of women after having a new baby.  Treatment counseling therapy is highly effective in treating this in most women, and can help you take charge of the way you think and feel.  Through counseling and medication, you can experience the emotional support you need to get back to your normal self once again.  Postpartum Depression not only affects you, it affects your partner and other members of the family as well.  Your partner may need counseling along with you, to help focus on your relationship and the changes that come along with having a new baby.

Treatment counseling therapy for both you and your partner is very effective.  You need help controlling your emotions, setting goals and solving problems.  A feeling of sadness and mood swings are natural feelings that most women experience after giving birth.  The "baby blues" as this is known as, usually goes away after just a few weeks.  Postpartum Depression, however, is a more serious condition that often interferes with your ability to care for your new baby, as well as yourself.  With treatment counseling therapy and the support of your family, you can get back on the path to becoming a happy and healthy mother, as well as focus more attention on your own needs.

You may just feel that you have the baby blues, but there are some symptoms that indicate a more serious condition.  These may include:

  • Feeling worthless and guilty
  • Feeling that you lack interest in your baby
  • Worry of hurting your baby
  • No energy or motivation
  • Appetite or weight changes
  • Sleep disturbances - sleeping more or less
  • Loss of pleasure in your life
  • Having negative thoughts about your baby
  • Frequent thoughts of death or suicide

Experiencing these symptoms may indicate that you are suffering from Postpartum Depression.  This condition often becomes noticeable soon after childbirth and gradually worsens over a several month period.  In some women, it may come on quickly.  Treatment counseling therapy should be seriously considered if you believe that you may have this condition.  Sometimes antidepressant medications are used to help ward off the sad, helpless feelings you may have.

Postpartum Depression can also affect your new baby.  Since your ability to function normally is impaired, you may feel irritable, tired and ready to cry at the drop of a hat, which can affect your baby.

Causes of this condition vary, and can be a combination of several factors.  Sometimes, the rapid hormonal changes that take place may trigger depression.  Thyroid levels may decrease, and your blood pressure may change.  All of these things affect how you feel and your moods after giving birth.  You are also experiencing huge changes in your life.  Your entire lifestyle is changing, as well as your body.  Caring for your baby can take a toll on your energy.

With treatment counseling therapy, you will find that Postpartum Depression can help you deal with the changes taking place in your life, improve mood and help you and your partner become involved in a normal and happy life once again.
